Police recruitment set to resume nationwide after court ruling clears the way

The National Police Service has confirmed that its countrywide recruitment of police constables will go on as planned after court orders that had previously stopped the process were lifted.

The Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, announced that the exercise will be held on November 17, 2025, and will happen at the same time across all sub-counties in Kenya.

This marks the official continuation of the much-anticipated recruitment drive, which had faced legal challenges over who had the authority to conduct it.

The court case that had suspended the process was filed by former Transport Minister and Kilome Member of Parliament, John Harun Mwau.

He argued that the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) was not recognized under Article 239(1) of the Constitution as a national security organ and therefore had no legal power to oversee the recruitment.

On October 30, 2025, Justice Hellen Wasilwa agreed with that position and ruled that recruitment for national security organs should be carried out by the organs themselves, not any outside body. The ruling, however, did not permanently stop the process but instead led to a brief delay as the National Police Service took over the responsibility directly.

Following the court’s clarification, the NPS assured Kenyans that all legal and constitutional procedures will now be followed in the fresh recruitment exercise. It stated that transparency, fairness, and equal opportunity will guide the entire process to ensure only qualified and deserving candidates are selected.

The service also stressed that the exercise will remain free of charge and warned the public against falling victim to bribery or fraud.

Anyone caught trying to influence the process will face arrest and prosecution. To qualify, applicants must be Kenyan citizens aged between 18 and 28 years and possess a valid national identification card. They are also required to have scored a minimum grade of D+ in KCSE, with at least a D+ in English or Kiswahili.

Candidates must be physically and medically fit, with male applicants required to have a minimum height of 5 feet 8 inches and female applicants at least 5 feet 3 inches.

Female candidates must also not be pregnant during recruitment or training. Additionally, those with criminal records or pending cases will automatically be disqualified, while National Youth Service graduates who meet all the requirements are encouraged to apply.

Recruitment centers have been listed across the country to ensure accessibility. In Nairobi County, the process will take place in various venues including Moi Sports Centre in Kasarani, Nyayo Stadium, City Stadium, and several Embakasi grounds.

Mombasa County will hold its exercise in areas such as Kisauni Police Headquarters, Nyali A.S.K Showground, and Likoni Approved Grounds.

In Uasin Gishu County, venues include Eldoret A.S.K Showground, Turbo DCC’s Office, and Moiben Grounds.

Kisumu County applicants will report to Kenyatta Grounds, Mamboleo Showground, and several DCC offices, while Nakuru County will use Afraha Stadium, Gilgil Stadium, and Naivasha DCC’s Office among others.

The National Police Service emphasized that this exercise is aimed at strengthening the service by recruiting disciplined, qualified, and patriotic young Kenyans. It urged all interested applicants to prepare their documents early and report to the nearest listed venues on the stated date.

The NPS also assured the public that integrity, merit, and fairness will be at the core of this nationwide recruitment.
