A wave of shock has hit Meru County after police arrested a senior Catholic nun in connection with the brutal murder of a junior nun at a local convent.
The incident, which took place at a mission compound in Imenti Central, has left the Catholic community and residents deeply shaken.
According to police reports, the lifeless body of the young nun was found inside her room early Sunday morning, with visible injuries on her head and neck.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the two nuns had engaged in a heated argument the previous evening over what sources described as “internal misunderstandings” within the convent.
Meru County Police Commander Isaac Thuranira confirmed the arrest, saying the senior nun, who has been serving in the church for over 25 years, was taken into custody after officers linked her to the killing.
“We have a suspect in custody and investigations are ongoing. Once we complete the probe, she will be arraigned in court,” Thuranira told journalists.
Police officers spent several hours at the convent collecting evidence and interviewing other nuns who live within the compound.
The body of the deceased was taken to Meru Level 5 Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination.
Eyewitnesses from the nearby village said they were woken up by screams late at night but assumed it was a normal disagreement.
“We only learned in the morning that one of the sisters had been killed. It is very sad because they have always lived peacefully,” one resident said.
The Catholic Diocese of Meru released a brief statement expressing sadness over the incident and urging members of the public to remain calm as investigations continue.
Church officials described the event as tragic and uncharacteristic of the religious community, promising to cooperate fully with law enforcement.
The shocking murder has raised many questions about internal conflicts within religious institutions and the mental well-being of clergy members.
Police are expected to provide more details once the investigations are complete.
