Kenya Power announces widespread outages in effort to strengthen electricity network

Residents and business owners in parts of Nyeri, Embu, and Kiambu counties are set to experience temporary power interruptions on Monday, October 13, 2025, following a scheduled maintenance exercise by Kenya Power.

The company says the planned outages are part of ongoing efforts to improve the reliability of electricity supply by upgrading aging infrastructure and carrying out essential system checks.

In an announcement shared on X on October 12, Kenya Power provided detailed information on the specific locations and timeframes for the interruptions, urging affected customers to plan accordingly.

The utility company noted that while the exercise might cause inconvenience, it is an important step toward ensuring stable power supply and reducing cases of unplanned blackouts in the future.

In Nyeri County, the maintenance work will take place between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., targeting areas around King’ong’o near Dedan Kimathi University and nearby neighbourhoods.

Several locations are expected to be affected, including Gamerock, Kingongo, Mt. Kenya Power has advised customers in these areas to plan for the full-day outage and take necessary precautions to protect electrical equipment.

In Embu County, the planned power cut will begin slightly earlier, running from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The affected areas include Ishiara, Karurumo, Kanyombora, Kagaga, Iriri, Karerema, Kabubu Kanyama, Kamumu, Kadde, Gatatha, Kavegero, Mugwanjogu, Kasafari, Karagare, Intex Crasher, Murari, and other surrounding localities.

Kenya Power said the maintenance work in these regions will focus on strengthening distribution lines and improving transformer capacity to handle increased electricity demand.

Kiambu County is also listed among the areas where maintenance will be carried out on Monday.

Power supply will be interrupted from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in Mataara and Gacharage Market areas, affecting locations such as Mataara Tea Factory, Ngethu Water Works, Upper Camp, Gathugu Village, Gachege Tea Factory, Gituamba Market, Gatunguru Boys, Mataara Dispensary, Miuugu Village, Kiriko Mission, and Kariminu Water.

Other areas that will be impacted include Kanyoni Market, Ndiko Market, Gakoe Market, Gicheha Farm, Thuraku Village, Karatu Market, Wanuugu Village, Kirangi Village, Ituramiro Market, Gacharage Water, Gairi Market, Ndairegu Water, Gaiteete Market, Kaguyi Village, Karinga Girls, Igamba Market, and nearby customers.

Kenya Power emphasized that such maintenance exercises are vital for system upgrades that support long-term stability and safety of the power grid.

The company encouraged residents and business owners to switch off electrical appliances during the outage periods to prevent damage once power is restored.

It also urged customers to stay updated through its official communication channels for any changes or additional information regarding the maintenance schedule.

The company reiterated its commitment to improving service delivery and reducing frequent power interruptions through regular infrastructure improvements.

The planned maintenance may cause temporary inconvenience, but Kenya Power maintains that these short-term disruptions are necessary to ensure a more reliable electricity supply across the affected regions.
