Kericho politics have taken a sharp turn with the resignation of Agriculture County Executive Committee Member, Magerer Langat, who stepped down just a day before he was expected to appear before the county assembly committee investigating him.
His exit has added a layer of tension to an already heated political environment, raising questions about fairness, accountability, and the balance of power in Governor Erick Mutai’s administration.
Langat’s resignation came on Sunday, September 28, 2025, only hours before the scheduled start of hearings on Monday.
He was among six of the ten members of Governor Mutai’s cabinet lined up to face separate motions of impeachment brought forward by the Members of County Assembly.
Each CEC was expected to respond to individual charges, though the specific details of the accusations have not been released to the public.
Insiders, however, suggest the issues range from alleged mismanagement to abuse of office and even claims of insubordination.
Speaking in a press briefing, Langat delivered sharp criticism of the process, describing it as predetermined and biased.
He said the committee tasked with handling the matter was structured in a way that left no chance for fairness.
According to him, the decision on his fate had already been made long before he was given the opportunity to defend himself. He argued that the presence of his accusers in the same committee investigating him was not only unfair but also against the principles of justice under the Constitution.
He also complained that he had not been given enough time to prepare his defense or access to the evidence being used against him, which he said weakened his ability to respond effectively.
His resignation has shifted the spotlight back to Governor Mutai, who is now facing increasing pressure to maintain stability within his government.
Analysts say the unfolding situation is more than just a test of individual officials and their conduct it is also a direct test of the governor’s ability to hold his administration together during turbulence.
The resignation, coupled with the looming hearings against other members of the cabinet, could signal deeper cracks in the county’s executive arm.
For the county assembly, the hearings remain critical, not only in shaping the future of the affected CECs but also in defining the working relationship between the assembly and the executive.
