Muchiri faces major backlash as Zanzibar trip exposes alleged love triangle and staff favoritism

A routine county delegation to Zanzibar has turned into a major controversy surrounding Nairobi Deputy Governor Njoroge Muchiri, revealing allegations of sexual misconduct, favoritism, and a breakdown of professionalism within City Hall.

At the center of the scandal are two women, Kellen Muna, recently promoted from a junior protocol officer to the role of personal assistant, and Peris Macharia, the office secretary. They are reportedly involved in a tense rivalry over Muchiri’s attention, creating a toxic environment insiders describe as a love triangle.

“What used to be a professional workplace has become a daily drama,” said a senior officer who spoke on condition of anonymity.

“It’s no longer about public service. It’s about proximity to the DG.” Muna, omitted from the official delegation list, reportedly traveled to Zanzibar at her own expense, raising questions about her intentions.

Macharia, who was on the official itinerary, reportedly clashed with Muna during the trip. Witnesses described the delegation as “tense and awkward,” with internal conflicts overshadowing what was supposed to be a diplomatic mission.

“It was embarrassing,” another staffer said. “Instead of focusing on Nairobi’s priorities, we dealt with silent conflicts, side glances, and passive-aggressive behavior between the DG’s aides.”

Muchiri’s choice to replace longtime personal assistant Solomon Kuria with Muna has fueled frustration. Kuria, now in a largely ceremonial position, is reportedly unhappy. “Her promotion was not based on merit,” said another insider.

“It was a decision made behind closed doors, clearly influenced by personal relationships, not performance.” Several staffers say favoritism, micromanagement, and ethical compromises have become common under Muchiri.

Former employees, including a protocol officer known as “Too,” have accused Muchiri of misconduct ranging from verbal abuse to inappropriate behavior.

“He would come to work drunk, lash out at junior staff, and make sexually suggestive comments,” said Too, who claims he was dismissed after confronting the DG’s conduct.

City Hall has remained silent, but the growing testimonials paint a picture of fear, favoritism, and fractured loyalties.

Civil society groups are now demanding investigations from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and the Public Service Commission (PSC). If substantiated, the claims could amount to gross misconduct, abuse of office, and ethical violations.

“This isn’t office gossip,” said Jane Wanjiru, a governance advocate with the Nairobi Accountability Network. “These are serious claims that require urgent attention. Nairobians deserve leaders with integrity, not ones caught up in petty disputes.”

The scandal comes amid pressing service delivery issues in Nairobi, including waste management, urban planning, and transport.

Critics fear that leadership distractions are undermining the county’s ability to fulfill its core responsibilities. As more insiders speak out, Deputy Governor Muchiri may face not only public criticism but also formal legal consequences.

His office has declined to comment, but the crisis in the DG’s office has become a matter of public accountability.
