In Nyandarua County, the question of who will succeed the current governor in 2027 has already begun to stir vigorous debate.
Among those whose names have been floated is Faith Gitau, the incumbent Woman Representative. While her political ambitions may be clear, a closer examination of her record reveals profound deficiencies that render her unfit for the county’s highest office.
The situation has been made worse by the female bearded vulture’s litigious forays, the last of which she has gone for none other than Simba Wetu, former deputy president, Rigathi Gachagua apparently for defamation.
Here are five compelling reasons why Gitau’s gubernatorial bid would be a misstep for Nyandarua.
First, Gitau’s political integrity and ethical standing are seriously tarnished by her involvement in protracted legal battles, including a defamation case that raises questions about her judgment. The case of Gitau v Mbugua, which has dragged through the courts for years, centres on allegations of defamatory statements made against a public servant.
While Gitau is the plaintiff in this suit, the very nature of the case on accusations of corruption and misuse of office speaks of a propensity for engaging in conflicts that detract from effective public service.
Ideally, good governance requires a leader who fosters unity and trust, not one who is perpetually embroiled in litigation.
Secondly, Gitau’s legislative and performance record, as Woman Representative has been markedly unimpressive. Despite serving for a considerable period in parliament, Gitau has no documented contributions to House debates or significant legislative initiatives.
Her committee memberships such as the Energy Committee and the Special Funds Committee have failed to yield any notable advancement for Nyandarua.
Yet, a governor must demonstrate a capacity to deliver tangible results.
The truth is Gitau’s tenure has been characterised by a lack of impactful projects or transformative leadership. This ineffectiveness is further highlighted by her absence from any current House committees, suggesting a disengaged approach to her duties.
Third, Gitau’s employment at UN was at clerical level that is utterly insufficient for gubernatorial leadership. Nyandarua needs a leader with proven experience in public administration, economic development, and resource management, not someone whose career has been primarily in support functions rather than leadership roles. Her dalliance in self-employment and “consultancy” further underscores a lack of executive-level experience.
Fourth, Gitau’s vision and policy priorities lack the depth and specificity needed to address Nyandarua’s challenges.
Although her areas of interest are listed as “transport, energy development, budget, politics, gender and social development, education, women & youth groups”, there is no evidence of concrete achievements in these domains.
A governor must articulate a clear and actionable agenda for development, but Gitau’s focus has been diffuse and without significant outcomes. Her recent defence of bursary funds is a basic function of her current role and hardly qualifies as innovative leadership.
Lastly, Gitau’s electability and public support are already in question. A telling social media post unequivocally states, “I don’t know who will become governor of Nyandarua 2027 but I know Mheshimiwa Faith Gitau will not be elected.”
This sentiment reflects a broader lack of confidence in her ability to lead. Governance requires not just credentials but also the capacity to inspire and unite diverse constituencies.
Gitau’s perceived divisiveness and lack of grassroots connection make her a weak candidate for an office that demands broad coalition building.
In summary, Faith Gitau’s candidacy for Nyandarua County governor is undermined by ethical concerns, a lacklustre legislative record, insufficient executive experience, vague policy priorities, fake academic credentials and low electability.
Nyandarua County deserves a leader who embodies transparency, competence, and a proven commitment to development, not one whose career is marked by controversy and inaction.
As the 2027 election approaches, voters would be wise to look beyond rhetoric and demand a higher standard of leadership.
