During the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN), you will not be able to bring vuvuzelas, whistles, drums, loudspeakers, or megaphones inside stadiums.
On Monday, July 28, the tournament’s Local Safety and Security Department issued a list of forbidden objects in the stadium, confirming that certain things will not be permitted entry.
The department advised football supporters to observe the regulations and remain calm, emphasizing the importance of turning out in large numbers to support Kenya’s Harambee Stars.
In addition to prohibiting noise-making equipment, the department forbade animals, including domestic pets, from entering the stadium, with the exception of service dogs.
The list also included ‘outside food’/takeaways, with the exception of food purchased inside the stadium, food brought for medical reasons, or food for infants.
Powdery goods like flour and other fine materials were also restricted.
Offensive or political flags were also prohibited.
“Flags or banners targeting politics, race, gender, religion, nationality, or personal identity will not be allowed into the stadium,” the notice read.
Furthermore, electronic, musical, and telecom equipment capable of jamming signals or disrupting broadcast, IT, or technology systems was added to the red list.
All sorts of bottles (including disposables), cups, cans, and any closed or sealed containers were also prohibited in stadiums.
Large objects like ladders, benches, step foldable chairs, cooler boxes, suitcases, and large bags and backpacks were also not permitted access.
The department also prohibited illegal drugs, including narcotics and stimulants, permitting only medically necessary medications for spectators.
The tournament’s organizers also listed things that could be used to damage or injure, whether sharp, blunt, or heavy, and capable of stabbing, hitting, or injuring.
The restriction was also extended to include explosives, detonators, and ignition devices.
“Any item that hides or contains explosive parts.”
Firearms or weapons, actual or fake guns, ammo, or firearm parts were all barred from the competition because they posed a security and safety risk.
The organisers outlawed all types of headgear, including motorcycle helmets, sports helmets, construction helmets, and any other helmets.
Other forbidden items included fireworks, flares, and explosives.
Smoke bombs, gas canisters, flammable, poisonous, or unpleasant chemicals were all prohibited.
Spray paint cans, liquid paints, caustic or combustible chemicals, and objects posing health dangers were also prohibited in stadiums.
Furthermore, breakable or pressurized containers, as well as dangerous compounds like powders, pastes, or chemicals, are forbidden.
The CHAN 2024 competition will begin on Saturday, August 2, at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and conclude on Saturday, August 30, at the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani, Nairobi, Kenya.
The current edition is co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, and will serve as a dress rehearsal for the 2027 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
