Members of the Embu County Assembly (MCAs) have denied plotting to impeach Governor Cecily Mbarire.
Speaking to the press on Friday, June 6, the MCAs shot down Mbarire’s supposed ouster after it was revealed that MCAs from Mbeere South were planning to present an impeachment resolution against the first female governor.
The purported impeachment plot was reported to have been sparked by Mbarire’s recent decision to establish the Governor’s Delivery Unit (GDU), which her critics claimed would result in duplication of duties across the county.
However, led by Mwea MCA Job Itumo, the MCAs dismissed the claimed scheme as mere politics and false allegations.“There is no impeachment that is going to happen.
The governor enjoys a good working relationship, and we are all committed to improving our county,” Itumo stated.
“These are people with their agenda and are engaging in the politics of the 2027 elections. They are determined to tarnish the name of MCAs and that of the Governor,”.
The current development comes after Mbarire, on Sunday, June 1, alleged there was a plot to depose her, implicating high government officials.
The governor stated they are also planning to destabilize her administration in Embu County.
“You know I am the chairperson of the UDA Party, and if there is anyone who has suffered because of supporting the government, it is me,” a livid Mbarire said during the 62nd Madaraka Day celebrations.
She went on to claim that anonymous government officials are holding clandestine night meetings and traveling from Nairobi to Embu to advance their agenda in collaboration with local leaders.
Her comments knocked the ruling party off guard as it sought to shore up support in the Mt Kenya region amid schisms among some of the President’s allies.
This caused Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, who is from the neighboring Tharaka Nithi county, to intervene to resolve internal issues within the ruling party, the United Democratic Alliance. On Wednesday morning, June 4, Kindiki met with the Embu Governor and the County Assembly Majority Leader, Peter Muriithi, in an attempt to restore calm in the region.
According to Kindiki’s office, discussions with the members also included the status of national government initiatives in the area.
The government also intends to act to protect vital agricultural value chains like as tea, coffee, macadamia, and cathus edulis (Muguka).
While his staff has been tight-lipped about whether or not the negotiations produced the intended goals, the timing of the meeting is critical for the DP.Kindiki is attempting to consolidate the Mt Kenya region following the ousting of Rigathi Gachagua, who is rapidly gaining popularity.
