As per the reports shared by CNN correspondent Larry Meadow, US President Donald Trump has signed a new travel ban that affects people from 12 countries. This decision was made after an attack during a Jewish protest in Colorado, where a man used a homemade flamethrower. Authorities say the suspect was living in the US without legal permission.
Trump said the attack proved that the country needs stronger rules about who is allowed to enter. The travel ban stops all travel to the US from Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen.
People from these countries will not be allowed to visit the US at all. In addition to that, there is also a partial ban on travelers from seven more countries. These are Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela. People from these countries can only get certain temporary work visas.
The new rules will start being enforced on Monday, according to the White House.Trump spoke about the ban in a video posted on social media.
He said the recent terror attack in Boulder, Colorado showed why the US needs to be careful about who it lets in. He made it clear that the government does not want to take risks with people who cannot be properly checked.
However, the ban will not stop players from coming to the US for the 2026 World Cup or the 2028 Olympics. The United States is co-hosting the World Cup with Canada and Mexico, and Los Angeles will host the Olympics two years later.
So, sports competitors from these countries will still be allowed to enter for these events.Trump also announced a visa ban on foreign students who were planning to attend Harvard University. He has criticized the school before and said it represents ideas that go against his policies.
He compared the current ban to one he introduced in 2017 during his first term, which also targeted mainly Muslim-majority countries. He claimed that ban helped protect the US from terror attacks that happened in Europe during that time.
After the new ban was announced, Venezuela responded strongly. The country’s interior minister warned its citizens not to travel to the US, saying it was not safe for anyone, not just Venezuelans.
Legal challenges are likely to follow this decision, as has happened with other major actions Trump has taken since returning to office.
The White House made the announcement with very little notice, and no reporters were present when Trump signed the order. It came just minutes after he spoke to thousands of his supporters at a party event.
Reports say that the suspect in the Colorado attack is an Egyptian man named Mohammed Sabry Soliman. He had overstayed a tourist visa and later applied for asylum. US officials described him as a threat and said the new rules are meant to stop similar cases.
The ban lists reasons for including each country. Some were included because they are in conflict or do not have working governments that can issue or check documents.
Others were listed because they have high numbers of people who overstay their visas. Iran was mentioned as a state sponsor of terrorism. Egypt, where the suspect is from, was not included in the ban.
Critics of the travel ban say it will again hurt families, especially those who will not be able to visit loved ones in the US. Some fear that it will cause suffering for people trying to come for weddings, funerals, or the birth of a child. But the Trump administration says the action is needed to keep the country safe from threats.
