“I recorded” Gachagua claims he saved his secret talks with Ruto on offers, threatens to leak them

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has recently revealed that he secretly recorded private conversations with President William Ruto.

In an interview aired on April 7, 2025, Gachagua disclosed that Ruto offered him a significant amount of money, between KSh 1.5 billion and KSh 2 billion, to resign from his position and avoid impeachment.

According to Gachagua, the offer came through a senior government official, though he chose not to name the individual involved.

Gachagua went on to explain that the conversations were recorded in a safe house managed by the National Intelligence Service (NIS). He emphasized that he had refused to meet Ruto or his emissary either at State House or a hotel, which led him to take the step of recording the discussions.

He said the offer was so serious and went against his personal ethics that he felt it was necessary to keep a record of the exchange.

During the interview, Gachagua recalled a phone call from Ruto, where the president allegedly told him that he could no longer work with him.

Ruto is said to have suggested that Gachagua resign or face the risk of impeachment. In return, the president supposedly offered a large sum of money to help ease Gachagua’s departure.

Despite the temptation of a financial offer, Gachagua rejected it, stressing that he was “priceless” and could not be bought. He referred to his pivotal role in funding Ruto’s 2022 presidential campaign, which he believed made him irreplaceable.

Gachagua further claimed that he had stored the recordings in a safe place, cautioning security agencies against attempting to search his property for the tapes.

However, when asked about the identity of the senior government official involved in delivering Ruto’s offer, Gachagua refused to name the individual.

He explained that the officer was merely carrying out his job and was innocent in the matter. Gachagua stated that he would only reveal the officer’s identity once the person retired, which he anticipated would happen soon.

Although the claims are serious, Gachagua made it clear that he was not interested in the money that Ruto offered. His rejection of the financial offer is seen by many as a bold statement about his belief in his own worth and integrity.

It also highlights the tension between the two political figures, especially considering Gachagua’s significant role in Ruto’s 2022 campaign.

Gachagua’s decision to keep the recordings confidential until the retirement of the involved officer has only added more intrigue to the situation.

Many are left wondering what further revelations may emerge from this ongoing saga in the future. The case has already sparked public debate and raised questions about the power dynamics within the current administration.
