Mother of slain Kenyan officer in Haiti demands answers as conflicting reports emerge

The mother of Benedict Kabiru, a Kenyan police officer deployed to Haiti, has spoken out for the first time, demanding clarity from the government on her son’s whereabouts.

Speaking to NTV, she revealed that police authorities had informed her that her son is missing, contradicting other reports indicating that he is dead.

She expressed frustration over the conflicting information and urged the government to provide clear answers. The Presidential Transitional Council of Haiti confirmed that Kabiru was killed on Monday, March 24, 2025, in Savien during an anti-gang operation.

He was part of the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission and was working alongside Haitian forces when he was fatally shot.

Haiti’s President, Fritz Alphonse Jean, mourned Kabiru’s death, calling him a valiant officer who made the ultimate sacrifice for the country’s future.

Despite this, Kabiru’s mother maintains that official reports given to her do not confirm his death. Instead, she was told that her son is missing, which contradicts the reports circulating online and in the media.

She made an emotional plea to the government, urging them to settle the matter quickly. According to her, the Administration Police Commander in Kikuyu informed her at 6:30 am on Wednesday that her son had disappeared.

More than 24 hours later, she had not received any further information, yet the internet was flooded with reports of his death. She expressed her anguish, stating that she wanted her son back the way she left him alive and well.

As a single mother, she emphasized that Kabiru was her only hope, and she could not accept the news being spread about his alleged death.

She also cautioned Kenyans against spreading unverified reports, stating that it was causing harm and pain to the family. She firmly rejected claims of her son’s death, insisting that he was alive and pleading with people to stop speculating. She revealed that she had been in constant communication with Kabiru since he was deployed to Haiti in July 2024.

In their recent conversation, he informed her that he had been transferred to Central Haiti, an area known for gang violence. The reports of Kabiru’s death first emerged on Tuesday, March 25, when local media in Haiti reported that he had been killed during a confrontation with armed gangs.

The situation was made worse by an attack in which three armored vehicles belonging to the peacekeepers were set on fire by gang members. Footage shared online showed the vehicles engulfed in flames.

According to Kenyan Police Spokesperson in Haiti, Jack Ombaka, the tragedy unfolded when the vehicles got stuck in a ditch suspected to have been dug deliberately by the gangs.

Kabiru is the second Kenyan police officer to be killed in Haiti since the Kenyan contingent was sent to help restore order in the gang-ridden nation. His death has sparked calls for accountability and transparency from the government regarding the safety of Kenyan officers in Haiti. With the conflicting reports about Kabiru’s fate, his family remains in limbo, desperate for the truth.
