Sakaja’s desperation exposed: Why Raila’s endorsement won’t save his failed leadership

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja’s recent interactions with Raila Odinga and his apparent willingness to join ODM raise more questions than they answer.

His endorsement by Raila may seem like a big political moment, but in reality, it exposes Sakaja’s desperation to cling to power after failing to deliver for Nairobians.

During the prayer event at Bomas of Kenya, Sakaja received calls from ODM leaders, including George Aladwa and Gladys Wanga, to leave UDA and officially join ODM.

Sakaja’s response, where he hinted at considering the move, was a clear indication that he is searching for political survival rather than standing firm on principles. Raila, in turn, praised Sakaja and encouraged him to “continue being in charge firm and do things properly,” as if the governor has been performing well.

However, Nairobi residents know better. Sakaja’s leadership has been marked by disappointment, with constant complaints about poor service delivery, collapsing infrastructure, and unfulfilled promises.

A recent poll placed his approval rating at just 35.7%, a clear indication that the majority of Nairobians do not see him as effective.

His administration has been riddled with failures, from poor garbage collection to chaotic matatu policies that have only worsened transport issues in the city.

Residents continue to struggle with poor drainage systems, inconsistent water supply, and an overall decline in service delivery.

The fact that Sakaja is now openly seeking political endorsements instead of focusing on fixing Nairobi’s problems shows where his priorities lie.

Rather than addressing the concerns of the people who elected him, he is busy aligning himself with Raila in what appears to be an effort to secure a political future.

It is a well-known strategy among struggling politicians when your leadership record is weak, seek refuge in a powerful political figure who can help you regain lost ground.

However, endorsements do not erase failures. Many Nairobians will not be swayed by political theatrics. Raila’s endorsement does not change the reality on the ground Sakaja has failed to deliver.

His administration has been reactive rather than proactive, responding to crises only when public pressure mounts.

The Agenda 47 movement and leaders like Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai have continuously pointed out his failures, yet instead of addressing these concerns, Sakaja is busy chasing endorsements.

His potential move to ODM may look like a strategic political maneuver, but in the end, it is meaningless if he does not improve his leadership. Nairobi needs solutions, not political games. The people are watching, and endorsements will not save Sakaja from accountability.
