Panic at Kisii hospital as 47-year-old patient kills himself by hanging inside ward toilet

Shock gripped staff and patients at Marani Level Four Hospital in Kisii County after a 47-year-old man committed suicide in one of the hospital’s toilets.

The deceased, identified as Daniel Orare, had been admitted to the facility for a week after being rushed there with an undisclosed illness.

According to reports by Kahawa Tungu, this incident has raised concerns about mental health awareness and support in healthcare facilities.

The hospital’s Medical Superintendent explained that the patient appeared to be recovering well before the tragic event.

He reportedly woke up at midnight and carried a bedsheet with him to the toilet.

The following morning, fellow patients discovered his body dangling from the shower in the washroom, with the bedsheet tied around his neck.

The sudden death shocked those in the hospital, with some patients noting that the man appeared slightly withdrawn in the days leading up to the incident.

The case has drawn attention to the rising incidents of suicide in the region.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death have been launched, with scene-of-crime officers documenting the situation and transferring the body to the local morgue.

Authorities are working to uncover whether there were underlying issues that contributed to his decision to end his life, despite his apparent recovery.

This incident has highlighted the urgent need to address mental health challenges, particularly among hospitalized individuals who may be dealing with emotional struggles alongside physical ailments.

Experts emphasize the importance of healthcare facilities providing psychosocial support to patients, as cases like this underscore the hidden battles many people face.

The rising trend of suicides has sparked concern across the country, with calls for more robust mental health support systems.

Communities are urged to encourage open conversations about mental health and to help those facing challenges seek professional assistance.

According to Kahawa Tungu, this tragic case serves as a reminder of the critical need for mental health awareness, especially in environments like hospitals, where patients are vulnerable and require not only medical care but also emotional support.

The hospital has pledged to review its protocols to ensure better monitoring of patients’ mental well-being.

This step, it is hoped, will help prevent similar tragedies in the future while fostering an environment where patients feel safe and supported.
